Northeastern State is set to play four-game MIAA series against Lincoln April 10-11

Live Stats

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State baseball team is scheduled to compete against Lincoln University for a four-game MIAA set April 10-11 in Jefferson City, Missouri.

The RiverHawks (19-14, 12-12 MIAA) and Blue Tigers (2-30, 1-19 MIAA) will begin the series with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. April 10, and the two teams will complete the series with a second doubleheader at 1 p.m. April 11. The series was originally scheduled to encompass three days, but rain in the forecast for Sunday has forced the series to be compacted into two days. All four games will be contested at the LU Baseball Field.

The RiverHawks currently sit eighth in the MIAA standings, while the Blue Tigers are 14th. NSU is 10-4 on the road this year, while LU owns a 1-8 home record.

Northeastern State is coming off its second series loss at home against rival Central Oklahoma. The RiverHawks run-ruled the Bronchos 16-3 in the opener and proceeded to lose the next three contests. NSU conceded a seven-run lead in the series finale against UCO and went on to split a two-game midweek set against Arkansas-Fort Smith. Northeastern State won the first game 3-2 and gave up a five-run lead in the second game to fall 7-6.

Eight members of the team are hitting better than .300 this season, with four at the top batting between .372 and .376. Junior Gabriel Wurth leads the team with a .376 (44-for-117) batting average. He leads the team in hits, runs scored (29) and steals (7), while also posting 21 runs driven in. Sophomore Bryce Davenport (.375, 39-for-104) is the team leader in RBI (27) and he is second in hits and home runs (3). Senior Licio Tamburlini (.375, 15-for-40) and junior Charles Sims (.372, 32-for-86) are also near the top of the team list in batting average. Sophomore Caleb Hill (.318, 27-for-85) leads the team in home runs (4) and is second in RBI (21). Sophomore Jared Aschbrenner (.245, 23-for-94) ranks fourth in the country in sacrifice bunts (10).

Northeastern State features three of the top pitchers in the MIAA in senior Kyle Shambaugh, junior Jake Kern and sophomore Ryan Helsley. Shambaugh is 5-0 on the mound with a 5.29 earned-run average. He has conceded 20 runs and struck out 29 batters in 34.0 innings pitched. Helsley (5-2) owns a 3.60 ERA in 40 IP but has lost two of his last three starts. He leads the nation in strikeouts per nine innings (14.6). Kern (1.89 ERA) is seventh in the entire country with 10 saves.

Lincoln lost all four of last week's MIAA series with Central Missouri, but the Blue Tigers split a midweek nonconference pair with Rockhurst.

Kaleb Davis (.395, 34-for-86) is one of the top hitters in the entire conference, and he leads the team in home runs (2) and runs scored (16), while landing second in both RBI (10) and doubles (7). Trevor Schnieders (.290, 31-for-107) is the team leader in home runs (2) and RBI (28). No other member of the team has more than one home run or double digit runs batted in.

Schnieders (1-5) is Lincoln's top pitcher with an 8.37 ERA. He has thrown two complete games in 33.1 IP. Kolton Clark (0-5) owns a 12.97 earned-run average in 25.2 innings pitched and leads LU with 17 K's. The duo has combined to start 13 contests.

Since NSU joined the MIAA prior to the 2013 season, the RiverHawks lead the series 5-1. The RiverHawks split a pair of road games in 2013 and won all four games at home last season.
