TAHLEQUAH -- The Northeastern State baseball team avoided scattered showers in the area and hosted its second three-game intrasquad series Friday, Sunday, and concluded Monday at Thomas C. Rousey Field.
On Friday afternoon, right-handed starters redshirt-junior
Jonathan Smithey and sophomore
Jon Moll dueled for the second straight week. Smithey was credited with the win by pitching five innings of one-run ball while striking out seven. Moll threw 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs and struck out five. Junior reliever
Cal Howard pitched well in his 2/3 of an inning, striking out one. Offensively, speedster sophomore
Blaze Brothers led off the game with a homerun and went 2-4 at the dish. Sophomore
Brayden Rodden also had a good day going 1-2 with a double, scoring twice. Returning infielders to the team, redshirt-junior
Collin Klingensmith and redshirt-senior
Jaxon Phipps, each had two hits. Klingensmith had a double, and Phipps cleared the bases with a homerun. The final score was 6-4.
Following a day away from the diamond, the bats came alive for the RiverHawks. In a game that ended 14-3, Klingensmith picked up where he left off, going 4-4 with two homeruns, picking up three RBI, and scoring three times himself. SophomoreÂ
Blake Freeman had a double and two RBI going 2-4. Sophomore
Tucker Dunlap doubled twice, and classmate
Corbin Lill went 2-5 with a homer. Additionally, redshirt-senior
Reid Fehr had a three-hit game, redshirt-sophomore
Justin Murphey went 2-4 with a homerun, and
Koby Ketcher was perfect at the plate, doubling twice and walking twice as well. Starting pitchers junior
T.J. Mullins and redshirt-freshman
Nic Swanson each struck out six. Mullins was credited with the win by pitching five innings of one-run ball and Swanson threw 3 1/3 innings, allowing four runs.
On Monday, runs were a scarcity; the game went to extra innings tied 1-1. Junior
Ryan Summers struck out 11 in 6 2/3 innings of work, allowing a lone run, while opposing starter sophomore
Lee Callison allowed one run in 5 1/3 innings, punching out seven. Redshirt-sophomore
Seth Key earned the victory by throwing 1 1/3 scoreless high-leverage innings. Senior
Michael Conn went 1-3 with a home run at the dish, sophomore
Blake Freeman tallied two hits in four at-bats, Phipps was 1-3 with an RBI and run scored, and freshman
C.D. White had two hits and an RBI. The final score was 3-1.
"This continues to be a fun group to coach," head coach
Jake Hendrick said. "There is competition everywhere, and different guys are stepping up every day. The competition is something I think we have all missed."
The team will continue practice further into the fall.
