RiverHawks to host Gorillas in MIAA play

TAHLEQUAH – Northeastern State continues their five-game homestand this weekend when they host MIAA foe Pittsburg State for three games. Game one is Friday at 2 p.m., with game two set for 2 p.m. Saturday. The series will wrap up Sunday at 1 p.m. at Rousey Field.

Opening Pitch
1. The RiverHawks are on a two-game win streak after beating Northwestern Oklahoma on Tuesday afternoon. The majority of the NSU offense came in the second inning, when they scored three runs on three two-out hits, including a 2-RBI single off the bat of Collin Klingensmith that put NSU up 2-0. Jaxon Phipps would hit a double that scored Klingensmith to extend it to 3-0.

2. Blake Freeman leads the NSU offense, batting .393 on the season. Chaz Orr is batting .382 with 13 runs batted in this season while Klingensmith has provided the power, swatting four home runs. Jonathan Smithey has been the ace on the mound thus far, bringing a record of 2-2 into the series, with a 3.68 ERA. He has been on the mound for 22 innings this season, and has recorded a team-high 25 strikeouts. Nic Swanson has been consistent out of the pen, having thrown 5.2 scoreless innings, with one save and seven strikeouts.

3. Freeman is riding a 26-game hit streak that dates back to last season. It is the longest hit streak in NSU's NCAA history, surpassing the 25-game streak that assistant coach Butch Rea had during the 2017 season.

4. Pittsburg State is on a three-game win streak after opening MIAA play against Fort Hays and winning a non-conference game against William Jewell on Tuesday. This will be the first true road game for the Gorillas and the start of an eight-game road trip.

5. Reece Garvie has the hot bat for Pitt State, bringing a .367 batting average into the game. He has three home runs, which is second on the team to Ryan Koval, who has four home runs and 16 runs batted in to go with his .303 batting average. Nick Brown has been the leading pitcher for the Gorillas, with a 3-0 record and an ERA of 2.76 out of the bullpen. In 16.1 innings, he has recorded 20 strikeouts and allowed just 11 hits. Tanner Lane has made four starts for the Gorillas, throwing 16 innings, allowing 21 hits and recording 10 strikeouts.

Up Next: The RiverHawks will host Southeastern Oklahoma on Tuesday afternoon.
