EDMOND, Okla. – The beat goes on for NSU women's tennis as they edged top-seeded Northwest Missouri in a 4-3 thriller Saturday and will advance to the MIAA Tournament Championship for the first time since 2018.
For the second consecutive day,
Sandra Mari Marti was the hero for the RiverHawks. With the match locked up at 3-3, the freshman took the first set of her six singles flight 6-3. Northwest locked up the second set at 5-5, but Marti won the final two games for the match win.
"Still not exactly sure how but we got it done again," said head coach
Tim McLane. "This young group just keeps battling and finding a way to pull out these matches."
Unlike Friday's tournament opener with Central Oklahoma, the RiverHawks weren't pushed to a third set in any singles flight. After taking doubles, NSU fell behind the Bearcats 3-2.
On the top singles flight,
Emilia Cosatto won the final two games in both her sets to tie the match with a 7-5, 6-4 victory.
The win is NSU's third consecutive 4-3 decision and moves them to 12-7 overall. Northeastern State will seek its third MIAA Tournament Championship Sunday at 10 a.m. where they will see Washburn.
