Women's Tennis comes up short at No. 14 Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. --  Northeastern State earned three points from the second half of its singles team as they fell short, 4-3, at No. 14 ranked Washburn on Saturday.

"Tough one to lose today, but very happy with the way we competed as a group," said head coach Tim McLane.  We didn't play our best doubles point but started strong in singles and had the momentum."

"We were in it right until the end and just couldn't quite pull it out against one of the best teams in the country. We've got a couple of real important home matches coming up and we need to make sure we play with that same intensity and compete that hard. "

Andrea Vargas won her first career match on court four 7-6, 6-4.   Sofia Kotliarova claimed court six in three sets 6-1, 6-7, 7-5, and Tegan Heaton won court five when her Washburn foe withdrew in the third set due to injury.

The wins on courts five and six came after Washburn clinched the match to move to 14-3 (4-1 MIAA).

Northeastern State (7-6, 2-3 MIAA) returns home this upcoming weekend for matches with Emporia State and Newman.
