ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The NSU men's soccer team opened the 2012 regular season with a 2-0 victory over the University of Missouri-St. Louis Friday evening.
The RiverHawks outshot the Tritons 7-4 and received goals from sophomore forward
Juan Peralta and senior midfielder
Bo White.
“This was a great way to open the regular season,” NSU Head Men's Soccer Coach
Rob Czlonka said. “We were able to play almost all of our travel squad today, and we were able to control a majority of the possession.”
Peralta's marker came in the 40th minute by way of a through ball from freshman forward
Joel Mendoza, who recorded his first-collegiate point with the assist.
White, coming off his four-goal performance in the team's final exhibition game, scored in the 64th minute off a free kick from just outside the 18-yard penalty box.
Senior goalkeeper
Jordan Ladbrooke played the first 80 minutes, and freshman Eric Shepard saw action in the final 10 minutes as they combined for the season-opening shutout.
NSU will stay in St. Louis to face Maryville University at noon Sept. 2. The contest has been moved to Parkway Central High School's turf football stadium and not on the Saints game field. The change has been scheduled due to potential damage to the Maryville Soccer Field from the remnants of Hurricane Isaac, which is expected to douse the area with heavy rain.
