BETHANY, Okla. – The No. 25-ranked Northeastern State men's soccer team toppled Southern Nazarene 6-1 Saturday night at Wes Harmon Field.

The win for the RiverHawks (8-2-4, 5-1-2 MIAA) was the second this week over the Crimson Storm (2-14-0, 1-7-0 MIAA), as NSU defeated SNU 7-2 in Tahlequah on Monday.

The green and white also ensured it will be facing No. 17 Fort Hays State in the semifinals of the MIAA Championship Nov. 7 in Olathe, Kan.

Sophomore forward Joel Mendoza kicked off proceedings with goals in both the 14th and 24th minutes. He was assisted both times by sophomore midfielder Paul Samia. Samia then registered a goal of his own in the 28th minute with help from junior midfielder Josue Morales to put the road side up 3-0.

Senior midfielder Juan Gonzalez returned from injury to push the score line to 4-0 right before half, and the visitors added a fifth three minutes into the second half when sophomore midfielder Crosby Lee found the back of the net.

SNU avoided the shutout when goalkeeper Tyler Wythe converted a penalty kick in the 83rd minute, but freshman forward Jonathan Guzman made sure the final margin would remain at five goals when he potted an unassisted marker in the 85th minute.

Wythe (2-14) was able to make six saves, but he also allowed six goals in the losing effort. NSU redshirt freshman Jackson Biles (5-1-1) saved two shots and earned the victory.

Northeastern State will travel to Ouachita Baptist for a 4 p.m. match Oct. 28 and will then close out the regular season at home with a 5 p.m. match Nov. 1 against Harding.

NORTHEASTERN STATE COACH ROB CZLONKA
Statement…
"Paul (Samia) played well, as he assisted on the first two goals and scored the third. He and all of our sophomores did a really good job today. Our team in general played really well collectively. I was proud of how we were defensively. Outside of the penalty, I thought Jackson (Biles) had a strong performance. We have played matches basically every other day for the last week, so it was good for us to be able to get everybody some playing time. A lot of our younger guys got plenty of valuable experience tonight."
