WICHITA, Kan. – The No. 37-ranked Northeastern State women's tennis team posted a 6-3 victory over Newman University Friday afternoon at the Riverside Tennis Center.
 
The RiverHawks (19-2) jumped on top 2-1 after doubles and the Lady Jets (12-5) were only able to win two of the six singles contests.
 
NSU used a new doubles tandem in the No. 1 spot in the lineup in senior Ivana Belejova and freshman Lucia Cerchlanova. They fell 8-4 to Kirstie Symon and Taylor Jordan.
 
The RiverHawks squared the match at 1-1 after the junior duo of Jeanne Mallem and Houda Bellamine defeated Lisa Pleskan at Carissa Villaflor 8-4 from the second position.
 
The visitors entered singles competition with the narrow 2-1 advantage after junior Martina Bruzikova and sophomore Barbora Jirickova topped Alajandra Hernandez and Courtney Dold 8-3 at the bottom of the lineup.
 
Bellamine and Mallem recorded identical 6-0, 6-1 victories on the third and fourth singles courts, respectively. Bellamine topped Dold, while Mallem got past Jordan.
 
Symon put the Lady Jets on the board in singles play after she defeated Belejova 6-3, 6-0 at the top of the order.
 
Bruzikova clinched the team victory for Northeastern State with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Pleskan from the second position, and Jirickova added a sixth point following a 6-3, 6-3 win over Hernandez on the fifth court.
 
The match ended at the sixth flight when Jessica Brown defeated Cerchlanova 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8).
 
Northeastern State has one more non-conference match before heading to Springfield, Mo., for the 2013 MIAA Women's Tennis Championship April 19-21.
 
The RiverHawks will travel to Shawnee, Okla., on April 15 for a 3 p.m. meeting with Oklahoma Baptist University.
