Women’s tennis defeats Washburn 6-0 in first round

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The No. 37-ranked Northeastern State women's tennis team defeated Washburn 6-0 Friday afternoon at the Cooper Tennis Complex in the quarterfinals of the 2013 MIAA Women's Tennis Championship.

The RiverHawks (21-2) swept doubles and picked up three victories in singles over the Lady Blues (5-16) before the match was halted.

NSU, the tournament's No. 2 seed, will face either No. 3 seed Central Oklahoma or No. 6 seed Emporia State in the semifinals at 1 p.m. April 20.

Junior Martina Bruzikova and sophomore Barbora Jirickova were the first off court after topping Gwen Shepler and Nzingha Banks 8-1 on the third doubles court.

Juniors Houda Bellamine and Jeanne Mallem got past Sophie O'Neill and Casyn Buchman 8-4 at the second position, and senior Ivana Belejova and freshman Kristina Savchenkov defeated Jodie Blackim and Kirsten Holle 9-8 (7-5) on the top court.

Belejova posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over O'Neill at No. 1 singles to push the overall score to 4-0.

Bellamine sent NSU through to the next round with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Holle at the fourth flight. Mallem finished right after Bellamine, and she defeated Shepler 6-2, 6-1 on the fifth court. The other three singles matches went unfinished.
