SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The No. 37-ranked Northeastern State women's tennis team fell 5-2 to No. 35 Southwest Baptist Sunday in the finals of the 2013 MIAA Women's Tennis Championship.
 
The Bearcats (21-1) secured their third-straight conference championship, and they also defeated the RiverHawks (22-3) for the second time this year.
 
SBU started strong by sweeping the doubles portion of competition.
 
Fanni Varga and Christina Zentai upset the No. 19-ranked pair of senior Ivana Belejova and freshman Kristina Savchenkov. Adrien Kovacs and Faiga Schmidt defeated NSU's junior duo of Houda Bellamine and Jeanne Mallem 8-3 on the second court. Mehak Singh and Andjela Panovski topped junior Martina Bruzikova and Barbora Jirickova 8-3 on the third court.
 
Mallem and Savchenkov cut the score to 3-2 with wins at No. 5 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Mallem defeated Schmidt 6-1, 6-0, while Savchenkov topped Singh 6-1, 7-5.
 
Any hopes of a comeback were halted when Belejova lost 6-4, 6-2 to No. 39-ranked Varga on the top singles court, and Zentai clinched the championship for SBU with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Bruzikova from the third position.
 
Northeastern State will now await its fate in the 2013 NCAA Women's Tennis Championship. The RiverHawks are a potential candidate to host a regional round. The NCAA selection show will be held at 7 p.m. April 23.
