INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 37-ranked Northeastern State women's tennis team was selected as one of 48 schools to participate in the 2013 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship, it was announced on the NCAA.com selection show Tuesday night.
The RiverHawks (22-3) were one of four teams from the Central Region to earn bids, and they received the No. 2 seed in the region.
NSU will play host to No. 3 seed Central Oklahoma (16-3) at noon April 27 at the NSU Tennis Complex. The winner will advance to the NCAA Championship May 8-11 in Surprise, Ariz.
“We couldn't be happier to be in this position,” NSU coach
Amanda Stone said. “At the beginning of the year I don't think anyone expected us to be hosting an NCAA regional and have such a great opportunity to move forward to the NCAA Championship in Arizona.”
The other match in the Central Region will feature No. 1 Southwest Baptist playing host to No. 4 Augustana College of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
“Our hard work has carried us this far and we will go into Saturday's match prepared to do what we need to do,” Stone said.
Northeastern State owns victories in both matchups with Central Oklahoma this season. The RiverHawks defeated UCO 6-3 on March 7 in Tahlequah, and they topped the Bronchos 5-1 April 20 in Springfield, Mo., in the semifinals of the 2013 MIAA Championship.
