SURPRISE, Ariz. – The No. 34-ranked Northeastern State women's tennis team saw its season come to an end with a 5-0 loss to No. 3 BYU-Hawaii Wednesday night in the 2013 NCAA Division II Championship Round of 16 at the Surprise Tennis Complex.

The Lady Seasiders (27-1) won all three doubles matches and were able to take the top two singles courts before the RiverHawks (23-4) could earn a point at the other four positions.

“This was an outstanding season for Northeastern State tennis,” first-year NSU coach Amanda Stone said. “We proved today that we can play with the best teams in the country. We're excited to get next year underway so we can start closing the gap.”

The first decision came at No. 3 doubles, where BYU-Hawaii's team of Jade Griffin and Sasha Ulbrichtova defeated junior Martina Bruzikova and sophomore Barbora Jiricikova 8-2.

Marika Kobayashi and Marietta Tuionetoa, the No. 9-ranked doubles team in the nation, defeated the junior duo of Houda Bellamine and Jeanne Mallem 8-1 at the second position.

Doubles competition ended when Annie Hwang and Sherry Liu, the No. 1-ranked doubles duo in the NCAA, took down senior Ivana Belejova and freshman Kristina Savchenkov 8-2 on the top court.

The Lady Seasiders quickly made the match 4-0 when Hwang, the nation's No. 2-ranked singles player, defeated Belejova 6-0, 6-0 on the top court.

The match lasted about another hour, with NSU taking opening sets on the third and sixth courts.

BYU-Hawaii was able to close proceedings before the RiverHawks could get on the board when No. 6-ranked Liu topped Savchenkov 6-2, 6-0 at the second position.

Northeastern State made its 13th appearance in the NCAA Championship and advanced to the NCAA Round of 16 for the eighth time in the last 14 years.
