TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State baseball team fell twice to No. 2 Minnesota State University Sunday afternoon at Rousey Field.

The RiverHawks (2-2) dropped the first contest 7-2 and then fell 13-4 in the nightcap. The Mavericks (3-1) are coming off a season where they posted a 42-9 record and finished second at the 2013 NCAA Division II College World Series.

Leading the charge for NSU was senior outfielder
Cody Robinson, who finished 4-for-7 on the afternoon with his first two home runs of the season. His first home run came against MSU's Jason Hoppe, who was a Rawlings/ABCA First Team All-American a year ago.

The Mavericks jumped on top of the timid RiverHawks with four first-inning runs, and the home team could never quite recover.

Connor McCallum led MSU with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate. He had two runs batted in and two runs scored. Minnesota State outhit NSU 10-6. Hoppe earned the victory on the mound after tossing 5.0 innings and conceding six hits and two runs. Matt Geislinger and Tyler Ockuly threw the final two frames and only allowed one baserunner. The relievers also combined for six strikeouts.

Waylon Davis earned his first-career starting assignment at NSU and took the loss after allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits in 3.0 innings. True freshman
Ryan Helsley pitched for 3.0 innings of relief and allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits. Redshirt freshman
Bobby Sehgal tossed the final frame and conceded two hits.

Robinson was the lone member of the team to register multiple hits, as he finished 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the fifth inning off Hoppe. Senior
Ryan Staggs scored the other run for Northeastern State.

The RiverHawks jumped on top 2-0 when Robinson blasted his second home run of the day over the left field wall in the bottom of the first, but the Mavericks remained steady and were able to find their way to 13 runs.

The first two of those runs came in the fourth, and the visitors posted a six-run fifth that seemingly put the game out of reach. MSU then added four insurance runs in the final three frames, while NSU could only respond with two more runs.

Minnesota State outhit Northeastern State 15-9 and took advantage of five RiverHawk errors.

David Weber finished 3-for-5 to lead NSU, and Robinson was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Staggs also had two hits for Northeastern State.

The RiverHawks used six pitchers, with junior starter
Bryan McClellan (0-1) getting tagged with the loss. He conceded four runs on six hits in 4.1 innings.

Bryce Bellin threw 4.2 innings for the Mavericks and landed one out shy of earning the decision. He allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits. Reliever Tyler Frohwirth (1-0) picked up the win after keeping NSU off the scoreboard for the next 2.1 frames.

Northeastern State will now jump into MIAA action with a four-game road trip to #17 Missouri Western State Feb. 21-23.
