CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Northeastern State baseball team defeated Rogers State 4-1 Tuesday afternoon at the Diamond Sports Complex to snap a six-game losing streak.

The RiverHawks (3-6) fell behind early but used multiple Hillcat (7-4) mistakes to secure the victory.

Chase Knott opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when a single plated Alex Cochran, who finished with half of RSU's four hits.

Junior
Cayle Shambaugh led off the top of the second with a single, advanced to second base on an error from the pitcher and later scored on a wild pitch. Senior
Mitch Stevenson also scored in the frame to put NSU ahead for good. He reached base on an infield error and advanced to second on a walk to senior
Kyle Singleton. Stevenson then moved to third base on the wild pitch that scored Shambaugh and scored on a second wild pitch.

Senior
David Weber added an insurance run in the third when he touched home on a sacrifice fly from Shambaugh. Weber led off the frame with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A fly out to right field from senior
Cody Robinson helped Weber move to third, and then Shambaugh brought him home with a sac fly to right field.

Stevenson scored in the sixth to put NSU on top by the final 4-1 margin, and the Hillcats were never able to respond.

After starting the season 3-for-14 at the plate, Shambaugh came on strong against RSU with a 3-for-4 effort. He drove home one and scored once. Stevenson added a 2-for-3 day with two runs scored as the duo had five of NSU's seven hits.

Freshman
Zack Hammock (2-0) earned the win on the mound after allowing just one unearned run on two hits in the first 3.2 frames. Freshman
Ryan Helsley tossed the next 2.1 innings and only conceded two hits, and junior
Clay Debban, freshman
Bryce Davenport and junior
Seth Hudson all got an inning of work. None of the final three relievers allowed a hit or a run.

Zach Tyson (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs in 2.0 innings. He only conceded one hit but walked three batters.

Northeastern State will return home for a four-game MIAA set with preseason league favorites Central Missouri. There is scheduled to be a doubleheader beginning at noon Feb. 27, with single games set for Feb. 28 and March 1.
