Northeastern State loses 6-1 to Division I Bears, Jirickova earns lone point for NSU

CONWAY, Ark. – The No. 35-ranked Northeastern State women's tennis team lost 6-1 to Central Arkansas Saturday afternoon on the UCA Tennis Courts.

The RiverHawks (5-3) lost the doubles point, which was contested as a single decision, and the Bears (6-3) won five of the six singles courts.

Junior Barbora Jirickova earned the lone point of the match for NSU when Sasha Ruocco retired on the sixth singles court in the first set.

Senior Martina Bruzikova and sophomore Kristina Savchenkov both lost in straight sets, but the matches were tight throughout. Savchenkov fell 7-5, 6-4 on the top singles court to Simona Horsikyan, and Bruzikova lost 7-5, 6-2 at the second position to Kelsey Williams.

"The most important thing for us right now is not wins and losses, it's learning and improving one step at a time," NSU coach Amanda Stone said. "Everyone needs to work together to make progress and not excuses. That is what's going to make us stronger, tougher and better at the end of the season."

Northeastern State is now set to begin MIAA competition on the road at 2:30 p.m. March 7 at Washburn.
