TOPEKA, Kan. – The No. 35-ranked Northeastern State women's tennis team collected its first MIAA win of the season with a 7-2 victory over Washburn Monday afternoon at the WU Tennis Complex.
 
The RiverHawks (6-4, 1-1 MIAA) snapped a short-lived two-match losing streak, while the Ichabods (1-4, 0-2 MIAA) dropped their second in a row.
 
The newly-formed team of senior Martina Bruzikova and freshman Valeriia Efimenko put NSU on top first with an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles over Jodie Blackim and Kirsten Holle.
 
The RiverHawks would win the doubles competition when sophomore Kristina Savchenkov and freshman Maria Lodge defeated Nzingha Banks and Casyn Buchman 8-2 at the third position. Washburn got on the board when Sophie O'Neill and Gwen Shepler topped sophomores Kate Nesbitt and Lucia Cerchlanova 9-8 (7-4) on the second doubles court.
 
Cerchlanova, Savchenkov and Lodge kicked off singles play with straight-set wins to secure the victory for Northeastern State. Cerchlanova defeated Maria Moral-Carretero 6-1, 6-2 on the fourth court, Savchenkov defeated O'Neill 6-2, 6-1 at the top of the lineup, and Lodge dropped Holle 6-2, 6-3 from the fifth position.
 
WU earned its second point of the match on the sixth court, when Shepler defeated Nesbitt 6-1, 6-3. NSU would take the final two courts, when Efimenko defeated Blackim 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and Bruzikova topped Buchman 6-2, 6-4 from the third position.
 
Northeastern State will now travel to Edmond, Okla., for a 2 p.m. match March 11 with No. 42 Central Oklahoma.
