EMPORIA, Kan. – The No. 35-ranked Northeastern State women's tennis team lost its MIAA opener 6-3 to Emporia State Sunday on the Milton Courts.
 
The RiverHawks (5-4, 0-1 MIAA) won two singles matches and one doubles match, while the Lady Hornets (6-2, 1-1 MIAA) were able to secure four singles courts and two doubles matches.
 
NSU registered the first point of the match when senior Martina Bruzikova and freshman Valeriia Efimenko defeated Taylor Smith and Jennifer Gerhardt 8-0 at No. 2 doubles. Emporia State would take the final two courts, however, beginning at the top of the order where Nicole Jara and Tawni Griffey defeated sophomore Lucia Cerchlanova and freshman Maria Lodge 8-4.
 
Doubles play ended on the third court, where Somer Schmidt and Amy Fugit topped sophomores Kate Nesbitt and Kristina Savchenkov 8-5.
 
Schmidt kicked off singles play with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Lodge at the fourth position, but Savchenkov added a second point for NSU with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Jara at the top of the lineup.
 
Efimenko won her first collegiate match on the third court and tied the team score at 3-3 when she defeated Gerhardt 6-2, 6-1.
 
The Lady Hornets earned the final three decisions to close out the 6-3 triumph.
 
Nesbitt fell 6-3, 6-1 to Tiffany Khounsombath at the sixth flight, and ESU won the match when Griffey defeated Bruzikova 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 at the second position.
 
Fugit closed proceedings with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Cerchlanova on the fifth court.
