CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The No. 31-ranked Northeastern State women's tennis team defeated Division I Southeast Missouri State 5-2 Friday afternoon at the Redhawks Tennis Complex.
 
The RiverHawks improved to 17-4 on the season and won their 12th match in a row, while the Redhawks dropped to 9-11 overall.
 
NSU jumped on top early by winning the doubles point (NCAA Division I scoring), and the road team took four of six singles matches.
 
Senior Houda Bellamine and freshman Maria Lodge started the match with an 8-1 triumph over Annisa Warasanti and Katy Brady from the third doubles court. The RiverHawks secured the opening point of the match when senior Martina Bruzikova and freshman Valeriia Efimenko topped Valeriia Kashina and Ekaterina Donetckova 8-4 at the top of the order.
 
The final doubles match was halted.
 
Junior Barbora Jirickova quickly put NSU on top 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Brady on the sixth singles court. SEMO got on the board when Valeriia Nagovitcina topped Savchenkov 6-2, 6-4 at the first position.
 
The Redhawks squared the match at 2-2 when Martin defeated sophomore Lucia Cerchlanova 6-3, 6-4 at the fifth flight, but NSU won the final three points and secured the 5-2 triumph.
 
Bellamine defeated Warasanti 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4 singles and Efimenko clinched the team victory with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Donetckova from the third position.
 
Bruzikova added a fifth point by defeating Kashina 6-4, 6-3 on the second court.
 
The RiverHawks, who are currently tied with Southwest Baptist with the best record in the MIAA at 8-1, will look to secure no worse than a tie for first place in the league with a 1 p.m. match April 12 at Lindenwood. A win over the Lions would give NSU its first MIAA Championship.
