Bellamine, Bruzikova Stay Sharp on Senior Day

Northeastern State honors seniors in final home match, RiverHawks roll Lions 8-1

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The No. 31-ranked Northeastern State women's tennis team defeated No. 50 Arkansas-Fort Smith 8-1 Tuesday afternoon at the NSU Tennis Complex.
 
The RiverHawks (19-4) improved their current win streak to 14 matches in a row, while the Lions dropped to 11-6 on the season.
 
NSU celebrated its annual Senior Day, and Martina Bruzikova and Houda Bellamine were honored between singles and doubles competition. The duo posted a perfect 4-0 record on the day to end their home careers in style.
 
Bruzikova teamed with freshman Valeriia Efimenko to defeat Abby White and Brittaney McCasin 8-2 on the top doubles court. She then went on to cruise past Madison Carr 6-1, 6-0 at the fourth singles line.
 
Bellamine and freshman Maria Lodge topped Carr and Whitney Hobson 8-6 from the third doubles court. Bellamine also defeated Amy Belanger 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5) at the second singles position.
 
NSU swept the doubles competition with the help of junior Barbora Jirickova and sophomore Kristina Savchenkov sliding past Belanger and Abby Thompson 8-3 on the second court.
 
Savchenkov also picked up a quality singles triumph, as she obtained a 6-1, 6-4 win over White, the No. 32-ranked singles player in the country, at the top of the lineup. Efimenko won a three-set battle over Masa Podunavac 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 on the third court, and Jirickova defeated Taylor Price 6-3, 6-1 at the fifth position.
 
The lone point of the match for the visitors came at the bottom of the card, where Thompson defeated sophomore Lucia Cerchlanova 6-2, 6-1.
 
Northeastern State will now take a 10-day break before opening play in the quarterfinals of the 2014 MIAA Championship. The tournament will run from April 25-27 in Springfield, Mo. The RiverHawks claimed a share of the regular season conference championship and will be the No. 1 seed in the tournament by virtue of owning the tiebreak over Southwest Baptist. Final pairings will be released once all regular-season MIAA matches have been completed.
