SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The No. 31-ranked Northeastern State women's tennis team moved on to the finals of the 2014 MIAA Championship with a 5-1 victory over Emporia State Saturday afternoon at the Cooper Tennis Complex.
 
The top-seeded RiverHawks (21-4) won their 16th-straight match and avenged an early-season loss to the No. 5-seeded Hornets (16-7). NSU will now face No. 2 seed Southwest Baptist at 9 a.m. April 27 in the championship match. This will mark the second-straight year the two teams met in the finals. SBU defeated Northeastern State last season.
 
Junior Barbora Jirickova and sophomore Kristina Savchenkov put the green and white on top early with an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles over Taylor Smith and Jenny Gerhardt. NSU added a second point at the top of the doubles lineup when senior Martina Bruzikova and freshman Valeriia Efimenko collected a hard-fought 8-5 triumph over Nicole Jara and Tawni Griffey.
 
Emporia State earned its lone point of the match on the third doubles court, where Somer Schmidt and Amy Fugit picked up an 8-5 victory over senior Houda Bellamine and freshman Maria Lodge.
 
Northeastern State added a third point to the team total when Savchenkov posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Jara at No. 1 singles. Bruzikova pushed NSU to the brink of the finals when she sat down Gerhardt 6-0, 6-0 in the fourth singles court, and Efimenko halted proceedings when she defeated Smith 6-4, 6-1 at the third position.
 
The other three matches went unfinished.
