FORT SMITH, Ark. – The No. 20-ranked Northeastern State women's tennis team topped Arkansas-Fort Smith 8-1 Friday afternoon at the Fort Smith Athletic Club.
 
The RiverHawks (1-0) swept doubles play before taking five of six singles matches against the Lady Lions (0-1).
 
NSU got on the board quickly when the freshmen duo of Molly Worden and Daria Panferova defeated Abby Thompson and Taylor Price 8-1 on the second doubles court.
 
Senior Barbora Jirickova and freshman Easton Parker then notched an 8-6 triumph over Madison Carr and Lindsy Pearce at the third position before juniors Kristina Savchenkov and Patricia Husakova used an early service break to take care of Abby White and Brittaney McCasin 8-6 at the top of the order.
 
Husakova got the RiverHawks off to a quick start in singles by defeating Price 6-1, 6-1 on the second court. Panferova clinched the team victory when she completed a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Masa Podunavac at the fourth flight.
 
Worden added a sixth point by defeating McCasin 6-2, 6-0 on the third court, and Jirickova defeated Carr 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. The Lady Lions' lone point of the match came at the sixth position when Pearce defeated junior Lucia Cerchlanova 6-4, 6-1, but Savchenkov, the No. 17-ranked singles player in the nation, closed proceedings with a hard-fought 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) win over Abby White on the top court.
 
The match featured four newcomers for NSU (Husakova, Worden, Panferova, Parker), and they posted a combined 7-0 mark in their debut.
 
Northeastern State will stay in Fort Smith for a 1 p.m. meeting Feb. 7 against Arkansas Tech.
