KEARNEY, Neb. – The No. 21-ranked Northeastern State women's tennis team earned an 8-1 victory over Nebraska-Kearney Friday afternoon at Harmon Park.
 
The RiverHawks (4-1, 1-0 MIAA) kicked off league play with a comfortable win, while handing the Lopers (10-2, 0-1 MIAA) just their second loss of the season.
 
NSU won on all three doubles courts and came just two points shy of taking all six singles matches.
 
Northeastern State began the match with an 8-3 victory on the top doubles court, where juniors Kristina Savchenkov and Patricia Husakova scooted past Emily Fink and Sthefani Rodriguez.
 
The freshmen duo of Molly Worden and Daria Panferova then defeated Kristin Weems and Paula Jimenez 8-5 at the second position. Sophomore Valeriia Efimenko and freshman Easton Parker closed the opening portion of the match with an 8-3 triumph over Emma Neil and Kari Emery at the third position.
 
Efimenko opened singles competition with a swift 6-1, 6-0 win over Fink at the fourth position, and No. 17-ranked Savchenkov clinched the victory after she got past Weems 6-1, 6-3 at the top of the order.
 
Panferova defeated Neil 6-1, 6-2 at the fifth position, followed by Husakova's 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Rodriguez on the second court. UNK's lone point came at the sixth position, where Emery defeated senior Barbora Jirickova 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (14-12).
 
Worden finished up the day with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 victory over Jimenez on the third court.
 
Northeastern State will now take on Fort Hays State at 10 a.m. March 14 in Hays, Kansas.
