NSU claims clash of undefeated teams

Northeastern State hands Northwest Missouri State first conference loss of 2015

Results

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The No. 21-ranked Northeastern State women's tennis team defeated Northwest Missouri State 8-1 Friday afternoon at the NSU Tennis Complex in a match that featured the final two remaining undefeated MIAA teams.

The RiverHawks (12-3, 7-0 MIAA) swept doubles play and the Bearcats (10-5, 2-1 MIAA) were only able to win one of six singles matches as they were handed their first league loss of the campaign.

NSU has just three matches left in the season against conference opponents. The green and white can claim no worse than a share of the MIAA regular season championship with a 2-1 record in those outings.

The romp over the Bearcats began at the top doubles court, where the No. 12-ranked team of juniors Kristina Savchenkov and Patricia Husakova defeated Camila Quesada and Lorena Rivas Jarolim 8-0. Freshmen Molly Worden and Easton Parker then scooted past Aniek Kolen and Stephanie Mannix 8-3 at the third position. Northeastern State went ahead 3-0 after senior Barbora Jirickova and sophomore Valeriia Efimenko teamed up at the second position to defeat Margaux Jaquet and Marianne Hull 8-5.

Singles competition began strong for the home side when Husakova defeated Rivas Jarolim 6-0, 6-0 at the second position. Worden clinched the team victory on the third court when she picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Jaquet.

Efimenko added a sixth point when she defeated Kolen 6-3, 6-3 at the fourth position, and Jirickova followed with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph on the sixth court over Vilune Sestokaite.

No. 50 Quesada earned the lone point of the match for Northwest Missouri State when she posted a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) upset win over No. 21 Savchenkov at the top of the order, but the RiverHawks would close the match on top when Parker defeated Hull 7-5, 6-4 at the fifth flight.

Northeastern State will now step out of conference for a battle with No. 14 Midwestern State. The RiverHawks and Mustangs will meet at 2 p.m. April 7 in Wichita Falls, Texas.
