SURPRISE, Ariz. – The No. 17-ranked Northeastern State women's tennis team lost 5-1 to No. 13 St. Mary's in the NCAA Championship Round of 16 Wednesday evening at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Center.
 
The RiverHawks saw their season come to an end with a 20-6 record, but not before they earned their first point at the national finals since 2007. NSU had advanced to the Round of 16 each of the previous two years but lost both matches by 5-0 margins.
 
The season finale began with the Rattlers (21-1) sweeping doubles competition.
 
No. 7-ranked Cristina Lopez and Mariana Rong defeated the No. 10-ranked junior tandem of Kristina Savchenkov and Patricia Husakova 8-2 at the top of the lineup. Felicity Delgado and Kerry Wiegand then topped the freshmen team of Molly Worden and Easton Parker 8-2 at the third position.
 
The No. 21-ranked team of Jamie Lee Denton and Kaylin Kruseman closed doubles with a 9-7 triumph over sophomore Valeriia Efimenko and freshman Daria Panferova on the second court.
 
The RiverHawks were the first to score in singles play when Husakova, ranked No. 39 in the nation, toppled No. 43 Lopez 6-4, 6-1 at the second position.
 
Efimenko then fell 6-4, 6-4 to Kruseman on the fourth court and the Rattlers clinched the team victory at the No. 1 flight when No. 31-ranked Rong defeated No. 36 Savchenkov 6-3, 6-3.
 
The other matches went unfinished with Northeastern State leading in all three.
