Northeastern State cruises to Round of 32

NSU defeats Augustana 5-0 in NCAA Championship first round, will play UNK Monday morning

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The No. 17-ranked Northeastern State women's tennis team defeated Augustana 5-0 in the first round of the 2015 NCAA Championship Sunday afternoon at the NSU Tennis Complex.
 
The RiverHawks (19-5) are the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Central Region and are serving as hosts to the NCAA Central Region 2 Championship. The No. 7-seeded Vikings (21-4) had their season ended by NSU for the second-straight year, and they lost their first match of the season to a non-Division I team.
 
Northeastern State will now face No. 6 seed Nebraska-Kearney at 10 a.m. May 4 after the Lopers upset No. 3 seed Northwest Missouri State in the first match of the day. The winner will advance to the Round of 16 of the NCAA Championship, which will be held May 13-16 in Surprise, Arizona.
 
NSU defeated UNK 5-1 in the opening round of the NCAA Championship a year ago and went on to defeat Augie 5-3 to advance to the national finals. Both matches occurred in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, with Augustana serving as host. The RiverHawks own a 2-0 record against the Lopers this season and have won by a combined score of 13-1.
 
Sunday's victory over Augustana began with a doubles sweep. The No. 10-ranked pair of juniors Kristina Savchenkov and Patricia Husakova defeated Jessa Richards and Sydney Postal 8-2 on the first doubles court.
 
Senior Barbora Jirickova and freshman Easton Parker then completed an 8-2 triumph over Jenna Helleberg and Meredith Lawrence at the third position. Sophomore Valeriia Efimenko and freshman Molly Worden completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win over Berkley Darr and Heather Sullivan at the second court.
 
Husakova, ranked No. 39 nationally in singles, earned a fourth point for NSU when she toppled Postal 6-1, 6-0 on the second court. Savchenkov, ranked No. 36 in the nation, finished the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Richards at the top of the lineup.
 
The other four singles bouts went unfinished, with the RiverHawks owning at least a one set lead in three.
