Women’s Tennis defeats Javelinas, 7-2

Northeastern State closes out Spring Break trip with victory over No. 43-ranked team

BRADENTON, Fla. – The No. 18-ranked Northeastern State women's tennis team snapped a two-match skid with a 7-2 victory over No. 43 Texas A&M-Kingsville Tuesday afternoon at the State College of Florida Tennis Courts.

The RiverHawks (5-2) were able to pick up a win in the final attempt of their Spring Break trip, while the Javelinas dropped to 4-8 on the season. NSU won two doubles matches and secured all but one singles match in the lopsided victory.

The first point for Northeastern State came at No. 1 doubles, where the No. 21-ranked duo of senior Patricia Husakova and sophomore Molly Worden defeated Paula Saenz and Nadia Grlj 8-0.

The only time the match was tied came following the second doubles decision, when Mariaxi Herrera and Erika Larrea earned an 8-5 victory over the sophomore tandem of Daria Panferova and Easton Parker on the second court.

Doubles swung in favor of NSU when junior Valeriia Efimenko and true freshman Karla Tomaic collected an 8-4 triumph over Madi Gomez and Marija Dimitrovska at the third position.

First off in the singles portion of competition was Tomaic at the sixth position. She earned a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Gomez before Efimenko could wrap up her 6-2, 6-4 win over Saenz at the fourth flight.

The third court is where the day was clinched, when No. 46-ranked Worden topped Grlj 6-0, 6-3. Husakova, the nation's No. 30-ranked singles player, contributed an additional point to the score when she got past Herrera 6-4, 6-1 from the top of the card.

The lone singles point for Texas A&M-Kingsville was in the second slot, as Dimitrovska was able to squeak past Panferova 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8). Parker closed out the match with a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) win over Larrea from the fifth court.

The RiverHawks are now set to return home and open conference play this upcoming weekend. First up will be a showdown with Nebraska-Kearney beginning at 2 p.m. March 18 at the NSU Tennis Courts. Northeastern State bounced the Lopers from both the MIAA Championship and the NCAA Championship tournaments last season. NSU is 6-0 against UNK since the two programs joined the MIAA prior to the 2013 season.
