Northeastern State drops Tigers, 8-1

RiverHawks women’s tennis improves to 2-0 in conference action

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The No. 18-ranked Northeastern State women's tennis team defeated Fort Hays State 8-1 Saturday afternoon at the NSU Tennis Complex.

The RiverHawks (7-2, 2-0 MIAA) were playing on their home courts for the first time this season and were able to improve to 4-0 against the Tigers (6-5, 0-1 MIAA) since the two programs joined the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association prior to the 2013 campaign.

NSU swept doubles competition and won all five contested singles matches in straight sets. The lone point of the day for FHSU was when the green and white defaulted at No. 6 singles.

The first point of the day came at the top of the doubles lineup, where sophomores Daria Panferova and Molly Worden defeated Laura Jimenez-Lendinez and Haley Weidemann 8-1. Junior Valeriia Efimenko and true freshman Karla Tomaic followed that up with an 8-2 win over Taylor Noel and Jessica Johnson on the third court.

Senior Patricia Husakova and sophomore Easton Parker completed the doubles sweep when they topped Alina Villalovos and Raven Dick 8-0 from the second position.

Worden, the nation's No. 46-ranked singles player, was the first off in singles play when she defeated Villalovos 6-0, 6-0 on the third court.

Panferova earned a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Johnson at the second court to clinch the team victory, and No. 30-ranked Husakova was quickly behind her with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Jimenez-Lendinez.

Parker topped Dick 6-1, 6-0 on the fourth court, and Tomaic defeated Weidemann 6-3, 6-1 from the fifth position to close out the match.

Saturday's result marked the first time in the four meetings between NSU and FHSU that the RiverHawks did not win by a 9-0 margin.

Next up for Northeastern State will be a 2 p.m. road match March 25 against Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri.
