NSU topples Bearcats, 7-2

Northeastern State moves two victories shy of clinching third-straight MIAA Championship

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The No. 16-ranked Northeastern State women's tennis team won its ninth-straight match with a 7-2 triumph over Northwest Missouri State Saturday afternoon at Frank Grube Courts.

The RiverHawks (13-2, 7-0 MIAA) now stand two victories shy of clinching their third-straight MIAA Regular Season Championship, while the Bearcats dropped to 8-10 overall and 4-2 in the conference.

NSU spotted the home team a pair of points by defaulting at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles due to an incomplete lineup, but NWMSU was unable to take advantage as the green and white won all seven contested courts to earn the lopsided victory.

The RiverHawks swiftly tied the match at 2-2 by winning both doubles matches that were played. Junior Valeriia Efimenko and true freshman Karla Tomaic were first off with an 8-4 victory over Aniek Kolen and Margaux Jacquet on the second court. Senior Patricia Husakova and sophomore Daria Panferova won the final four games to collect a 9-7 triumph over Lorena Rivas Jarolim and Kaja Emersic at the top of the lineup.

Sophomore Molly Worden picked up the first singles decision when she defeated Andrea Gallardo 6-2, 6-1 on the fourth court. Panferova was next off when Emersic retired during the opening set, and Husakova, who is currently the nation's No. 32-ranked singles player, clinched NSU's victory after wrapping up a 6-4, 6-3 win over Rivas Jarolim on the first court.

Efimenko added a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Vilune Sestokaite at the third flight, and Tomaic defeated Jacquet 7-5, 6-1 from the fifth position to finish up proceedings.

Northeastern State is in the midst of a six-match road stretch to close out regular-season MIAA play. The RiverHawks are now set to compete against Missouri Western State at 11 a.m. April 10 in St. Joseph, Missouri.
