SAN ANTIONO, Texas -- #9 Northeastern State used to late doubles magic to pull away and beat Texas A&M-Kingsville 7-2 before falling in the afternoon to #10 St. Marys 6-3 on Thursday.
In the morning match against the Javelinas, Northeastern State trailed in all three doubles pairings but snapped back.Â
Caitlin McCullough and
Easton Parker rallied from 5-4 and finished first in two-doubles with a 9-7 win.Â
Molly Worden and
Val Efimenko also were down 5-4 and won the next two games to get back to pick up a 9-7 victory in the top doubles slot.Â
Karla Tomaic and
Betha Gombarova needed a tiebreaker and bested TAMUK 9-8(4) to give the RiverHawks a 3-0 lead.
With the momentum out of doubles, the RiverHawks took the first set on five courts and never looked back to Texas A&M-Kingsville.
In match two, against St. Mary's McCullough and Parker prevented a Rattlers' sweep and took two-doubles 9-7. Worden and Efimenko dropped the top-spot 8-3 with Tomaic and Gombarova falling 8-4 in the three-doubles slot.
When play switched over to in singles, the RiverHawks wouldn't be able to pull ahead of the Rattlers, and dropped four points.
Thursday's split sends the RiverHawks to 3-2 this season, St. Mary's goes to 3-0, Texas A&M-Kingsville is now 1-1.
The RiverHawks will travel to Austin, Texas to face St. Edward's on Friday at 2 p.m.
