NSU slips to tenth at Rattler Invite

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Northeastern State slipped three spots to finish in tenth place in their Spring opener at the St. Mary's Rattler Invite Tuesday.

The RiverHawks struggled to find consistency on The Dominion Country Club and shot the second-highest score with a 31-over, 319 score.   After three rounds of play, they finished with a 922 (304-299 on Monday), 33 shots back of the lead.  

Grant Hynes paced NSU with a 228 and shot an 80 in the final round.  The redshirt-sophomore had a tough start to the day with a 3-over on the opening pin of the day.   Hynes would finish tied for 25th on the leaderboard.  

Hunter Pennington was a shot back of Hynes after three rounds and shot a 79 to finish tied for 32nd place.    Casey Paul had a 232 (77-76-79) and was tied for 39th, and Carlos Gomez was a stroke back of Paul's score.  Ty Shelnutt rounded out NSU's group with a 240 (82-76-82).

Northeastern State was fourth overall with 163 pars, but they fielded the third-worst scoring average on par-5s where they were 19-over.    Gomez was tied for the tournament lead with 39 pars.

St. Mary's won their tournament by five shots with an 888 score, Oklahoma Christian's Trevor Norby finished the medalist on a 214.

Northeastern State will have a short turnaround and will head to Las Vegas this upcoming Sunday for a three-day tournament.
