MONKEY ISLAND, Okla. --
Ryan Morant finished one stroke back of the medalist lead and was third place overall, carding a 214 (68-75-71) at the MSSU Invitational Tuesday. Northeastern State shot the highest round among the top-ten and slipped one spot to sixth, shooting an 887 (295-291-301).
The finish is Morant's best at Northeastern State, and he had an opportunity to tie for medalist with an eagle put on the last hole. He finished the three-round tournament with 13 birdies and 31 pars.
"Ryan showed a ton of guts and poise this week," said head coach
Scott Varner. "He is an entirely different player than he was a year ago and a huge bright spot for us so far this fall. We have had two tournaments in a tow where we have had a player come within a shot of winning."
Morant was the lone NSU player Tuesday with an even or under-par score.
Dominic Stevens had the team's second low round of the day with a 74 and was tied for 40th, carding a 225 (78-73-74).
Brayden Strickland is the second-best finisher for NSU, placing tied for 21st, carding a 221 (77-67-77).
Carlos Gomez shot his high round of the season with a 79 Tuesday and finished tied for 60th overall on a 229 score (74-76-79).
Brett Wilcoxen was tied for 74th, shooting a 233 (76-77-80).
Oklahoma Christian rallied with a seven-under round Tuesday and shared team championship honors with Hutchinson CC carding 864s.
OC's Mateo Pulcini and Hutch's Harry Crockett tied for the medalist title with a 213 score.
Northeastern State will be idle in men's golf until Oct. 11-12, where they will play at Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Mo.
