EDMOND, Okla. – Northeastern State saw four two-set singles wins amid a 4-3 victory over Southwest Baptist in the team's 2024 debut.
"It's always good to start the season off with a win, especially against a good team," head women's tennis coach
Tim McLane said of the result, "We made things a little too interesting for ourselves but we were able to dig in and fight back and pull it out."
Sandra Mari Marti,
Tegan Heaton,
Valeria Teran and
Andrea Vargas all emerged with two-set triumphs to drive the RiverHawks (1-0) in the team's winning efforts for the day. In doubles, NSU found a 6-0 outcome from the duo of
Leah Gonzales-Edwards and Teran, though SBU (0-2) claimed doubles on the afternoon with favorable decisions in both of the other contests.
"Anytime you can get four first sets, you're going to feel good about your chances of pulling it out, and we did a nice job of finishing those leads," McLane remarked about the team's singles performances.
The RiverHawks are back in action in Durant, Okla., continuing their non-conference dates with Southeastern Oklahoma on Feb. 20.
