DURANT, Okla. –
Valeria Teran had NSU's lone win Tuesday as the women's tennis program suffered a 6-1 setback at Southeastern Oklahoma.
Teran won her seventh consecutive match in the spring championship segment 6-2, 6-1 in No. 4 singles. However, the RiverHawks' (1-1) tough day started in doubles where Southeastern (4-0) clinched the early point by breaking 5-5 ties in both courts two and three and winning the final two games to grab the lead.
The match snowballed into singles and NSU except for Teran couldn't dig themselves out of early set losses. Northeastern State dropped courts three and five in a third set.
"Today was always going to be tough, going on the road playing the defending GAC champions, especially when we're battling through nagging injuries and illness," said head coach
Tim McLane. "At the end of the day, we just didn't play well enough to beat a good team. We made some rather uncharacteristic mistakes and they took advantage of that."
"The hope is that this is a one-time occurrence and will be a valuable lesson for us moving forward. The key for us now is to regroup and make sure we play up to our standards on Friday as we open up our home schedule."
Northeastern State returns home to host McPherson for the first time on Friday at 11 a.m
