Tennis clinches postseason berth, handling Newman

TAHLEQUAH -- Northeastern State concluded their home schedule with a 5-2 triumph over Newman Monday afternoon. The win clinches the team a spot in the MIAA Tournament in early May, while improving their home record on the year to a spotless 6-0.

The RiverHawks (9-6, 4-3 MIAA) claimed two of three doubles duels with the Jets (12-11, 2-5 MIAA), with the teams of Alisha Moldakhmetova and Sofia Kotliarova and Leah Gonzales-Edwards and Andrea Vargas emerging victorious for a second straight day to claim the opening point.

Singles action saw Moldakhmetova and Tegan Heaton claim two-set decisions on courts one and five, while Vargas finished off her Newman opponent in two sets at court four to clinch the Monday win for the RiverHawks. Meanwhile, Sandra Mari Marti escaped with a singles victory of her own in tie-breaking fashion on court three.

"Good job from this team just making sure we picked up a win when we had to have it," head coach Tim McLane said, "We're starting to play a little better here at the end of the season, so hopefully we can keep this momentum going for our last match this weekend, and then the conference tournament."

The Riverhawks finish the regular season in Edmond, Okla. on Saturday at Central Oklahoma.
