Ryan Helsley's summer league team won the 2014 National Baseball Congress World Series. The Santa Barbara Foresters, a member of the California Collegiate League, defeated the Seattle Studs 3-2 in 12 innings. The NBC World Series is held in Wichita, Kansas, every year, attracting the top summer-collegiate teams in America to compete for the championship. Â
The Tahlequah, Oklahoma, native pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in the NBC Championship game August 9, striking out three and only allowing one base runner. The hard throwing NSU sophomore threw the eighth and ninth innings, reaching the upper 90's with some of his pitches according to a release on the Foresters' official website.
The 2014 MIAA Freshman of the Year pitched 7.2 relief innings for the five-time NBC Champion Foresters this summer, while striking out 14. He finished with one save and a 5.87 ERA.
Helsley comes off a dominant first campaign at Northeastern State. He finished the season with a 7-4 record and a 4.60 ERA. His seven wins were tied for fourth in the MIAA and were the most by an NSU pitcher since 2009. He posted a 7-1 mark on the mound late in the year, while averaging 5.5 strikeouts per game during that stretch. He finished 12th in the MIAA in opposing batting average (.251) and 14th in total strikeouts (56). Helsley was twice named the MIAA Pitcher of the Week, and he only allowed 14 extra-base hits all season. In addition to garnering MIAA Freshman of the Year honors, he was also named to the All-MIAA Second Team.
Helsley will return to Northeastern State as a sophomore to continue to strengthen the pitching staff with hopes of leading the RiverHawks to an MIAA Championship in 2015.
